Roland TD-11K-S V-Compact Series Electronic Drum Set Review

Roland has long since been a trailblazer when it comes to electronic drum set, and with their TD-11K-S V-Compact series kit they continue to deliver high end percussion products. The TD-11K-S offers compact but durable construction and top notch performance, making for a great drumming experience.

Things To Consider Before Buying

When it comes to electronic drum sets, the prices can be quite varied and so can the sound quality and playability. If you've got a decent sized budget, it's not a bad idea to spring for a high end kit from the get go. The difference in the sound quality and the set's performance capabilities can often be night and day, and many drummers wind up upgrading to a more expensive kit down the road anyways.

The Roland TD-11K

The TD-11k-S is an eight piece electronic drum set with a mesh snare pad, three rubber toms, two overhead cymbals, a hi-hat pedal and a natural feeling kick pad. The drum pads are assembled on a compact custom performance stand, making for a lightweight setup. Also included is the TD-11 drum sound module, which comes loaded with 150 sounds and 50 drum kits. If you’re looking for a compact electronic kit with a plethora of sounds and great playability, the TD-11K-S is definitely a great option. While this kit will run you a bit in terms of price, it’s still well below a number of Roland’s other high end electronic sets.

Pros

  • Realistic feeling drum pads, particularly the snare
  • High end but not overly expensive
  • Nice selection of sounds to choose from

Cons

  • Significant investment
  • Cymbals lack dynamic range
  • Doesn’t come with kick pedal

Features And Benefits

Build

Roland TD-11K-S V-Compact Series Electronic Drum Set

The TD-11K-S exhibits high grade craftsmanship in its construction, which is compact and lightweight yet durable. The whole kit can be adjusted to fit into quite a small space, but the custom drum rack allows the drummer to fine tune the spacing of the individual drums. The drum pads have a great feel to them, with the snare’s mesh top getting very close to the real thing. One thing customers should note is that the eight piece drum set is actually missing a crucial component; it doesn’t ship with a kick pedal, so you will have to provide your own.

Performance

Roland has a reputation for producing realistic drum pads that feel responsive and dynamic to the drummer, and that’s certainly the case with the TD-11K-S. The drum pads are largely very realistic and responsive, with the snare mesh pad offering enough bounce to get realistic snare rolls. The kick pad has a nice deadened feel to it to keep it from feeling too rubbery, though the cymbals aren’t quite dynamic enough to fully emulate their acoustic counterparts. Overall though, the TD-11K-S is a solid drum kit that’s great fun to play.

Sound

Roland excels in the sound department with the TD-11K-S, which includes the TD-11 drum module. The module comes loaded with 150 sounds and 50 drum kit presets, giving you plenty to play with out of the box. The kits range from realistic acoustic set recreations to electronic sounding kits great for hip hop or dance music. The variety of sounds makes the drum set much more versatile, adding to the fun of owning an electronic kit. You can also use the included sounds to create your own drum kits, putting more power into the hands of the drummer.

Alesis Forge Kit

Alesis Forge Kit

For a more middle of the road option in terms of budget, you can always go with the Alesis Forge Kit. For around half the price of the TD-11K-S, the Forge kit comes with the same number of drum pads, as well as the Forge drum module complete with 70 kits and 600 sounds. However, with the reduced price comes poorer ratings in terms of playability. The kick drum has difficulty rating quick hits, while the drum pads themselves overall can’t quite compare with Roland’s offerings. However, for the money this is still a solid drum set.

Compared to TD-11K:

  • Less expensive
  • More sounds
  • Lower quality drum pads

Yamaha DTX532K Electronic Drum Kit

Yamaha DTX532K Electronic Drum Kit

Yamaha’s DTX532K drum kit offers up some stiff competition for the TD-11K-S, with the two being about equivalent in price. With Yamaha’s offering, customers will take home quite a few more drum sounds with the included module, which comes loaded with 691 high quality samples. The DTX532K also offers some added expression when it comes to its cymbals, which have 360 degree choke capability. Yamaha’s kit definitely boasts some impressive stats, making it a worthy contender with Roland’s drum kit.

Compared to TD-11K:

  • Nearly the same price
  • More drum sounds included
  • Stacks up well in terms of construction

Behringer XD8USB

Behringer XD8USB

On the lower end of the price spectrum is Behringer’s XD8USB, which features the same number of drum pads but at a much lower price. As expected, Behringer’s set features lower quality construction and can’t really compete with Roland in terms of playability, at least not at this price point. The included module features fewer sounds as well, coming with only 10 factory presets and five blank slots that can be custom programmed by the drummer. There are certainly a lot of features missing from the XD8USB that would be found on both the TD-11K-S and Yamaha’s DTX532K, but that’s to be expected due to its budget friendly price tag.

Compared to TD-11K:

  • Less expensive
  • Poorer quality drum pads
  • Fewer sounds included.

Final Thoughts

If you have the budget to accommodate a high end kit like Roland’s TD-11K-S, you’ll definitely get a lot of value for your money. Between the kit’s great performance capabilities and the wealth of sounds that come included with the TD-11 module, there’s plenty to justify the larger price tag. If you’re looking for a top notch electronic drumming experience and aren’t afraid of the larger price tag, then the TD-11K-S may just be the right kit for you. We've also included electronic drum set guide so you can check out what suit your budget.
