Ludwig LC179X016 Breakbeats Review

When shopping for a drum set, there are a few different options to choose from; generally you’ll be looking at either a 4 or 5 piece kit. While a 5 piece kit offers more variety, there are a few advantages to a 4 piece kit, such as their compact size, ease of portability and the simplicity of their sound.

Things To Consider Before Buying a 4 Piece Drum Set

When shopping for a 4 piece drum set, there are a few things you should keep in mind in order to get the best value. The most important elements of a drum set are its sound quality and how it feels to play, so these should be your top priority as you shop. However, you also will want to make sure the drum set you settle on is built with good quality materials that will hold up over time.

The Ludwig LC179X016

The Ludwig LC179X016 Breakbeats 4 piece drum set is designed to be small and compact, making it great for small space living as well as convenient to haul back and forth to gigs. The Breakbeats set was designed with a minimalist approach, featuring only the essential drums with a 16” bass drum ,snare, a rack tom and a floor tom.

There are no cymbals included in this set, and you will have to provide your own stand for the snare. However, the drums have a reasonably nice sound and feel, especially considering the price. The construction is of serviceable quality, contributing to the smaller price tag of the set. Even if you intend to add cymbals and additional toms on later, the Breakbeats set is a great kit to get you started and has all the basics that every set needs at minimum.

  • Portable
  • Can add more drum pieces later
  • Compact
  • No snare stand included
  • Not the highest quality construction
  • No cymbals included

Features & Benefits

Ludwig LC179X016 Breakbeats

Though Ludwig has packed plenty of value into this product, the low budget means the quality will have to give somewhere and in this case that means the construction. While it’s not of poor quality, it doesn’t use the highest quality materials in its build. The kick pedal can give you some trouble as well, as the bass drum rim is thick which can cause it to be too far away to strike properly. Overall though, the quality of the materials is serviceable, while much of the hardware used in the build is of good quality.

Ludwig’s Breakbeats set excels when it comes to performance, offering good quality drum heads for the price that will hold up through plenty of practice sessions. The compact nature of a 4 piece kit will have an effect on your playing style, but this kit feels great to play, even without the additional flare of cymbals. Performance is one of the most crucial aspects of a drum set and luckily Ludwig doesn’t disappoint, offering up a set that will likely exceed many player’s expectations.

Though the Breakbeats kit is limited in terms of drum variety, the sound quality of the four pieces should satisfy most players. Considering that this is a fairly inexpensive kit, it would be unreasonable to expect world class sound quality, but for the money spent the player will get plenty of value out of this set. The snare drum has the poorest sound quality of the 4 pieces included, but it is possible to tweak the tension of the snare wires to get it more on par with the other drum heads.
